Why Cultural Heritage Matters: Keeping Our Roots Alive
Heritage is the thread that ties us to our ancestors. For the Khwalo clan of the amaMpondo, it lives in our isiXhosa language, our clan praises, our beadwork, our ceremonies and the stories our elders tell.
Identity and belonging
When young people know where they come from, they walk with confidence. Heritage answers the question “Who am I?” long before the world tries to answer it for them.
Wisdom of the elders
Our elders carry knowledge that no school can teach: how to resolve conflict, how to honour the ancestors, how to live with dignity. Every conversation with an elder is a lesson worth keeping.
Language and praises
Speaking isiXhosa at home and calling our clan names — Khwalo! Mzangwa! Ncuthu! Mlanjana! — keeps our history alive in our mouths and in our hearts.
Art, dress and ceremony
Beadwork colours and patterns, traditional dress and rituals such as weddings and imbeleko carry meaning. They are living records of who we are.
Heritage in the city
Living in Soweto does not mean leaving our culture behind. Through gatherings, storytelling and creative work like Khwalo Production, we carry Pondoland with us and share it with the world.
Our responsibility
Heritage disappears when it is not practised. Record your elders’ stories, teach the children, and take part in family ceremonies. What we protect today becomes the inheritance of tomorrow.
